Comedy is more than just a performance for me; it's a passion, an integral part of who I am. It's my art, my craft. Even after on one of the darkest nights of my life, as a victim of gun violence, I found myself in a hospital bed, four days later still hustling, making calls to book my next gig. At that moment, I had no idea that my road to recovery would span 18 months. This video captures my comeback, my return to the stage post-rehabilitation.
I wear many hats, but first and foremost, I'm a father. I'm also a storyteller comedian, and producer with 13 years in the stand-up. Before comedy, I spent 13 years in law enforcement and security. I'm a gun violence survivor, too. From 16 to 30, I had many jobs I believe somewhere like 30 give or take, often leaving by choice or necessity, knowing middle management wasn't for me. My outspokenness often led to my departure. At 32, I left that cycle to pursue stand-up comedy. With my security background, I felt ready to entertain, though in a different venue. I quickly gained recognition, performing everywhere from local open mics to famous clubs in San Diego and L.A., even producing my own shows and mingling with comedy legends. Everything changed on Easter 2015, when I was shot in the face, an event that redefined me as a survivor of gun violence.
